IWI: Three Years of Marxist Theory in Action for the Empowerment of the Global Struggle of the Working Class

By Alexandra Liberi, IWI Communications

Look around the world today. Billions are hoarded by a tiny minority, war aggressiveness escalating and trampling over any remnant of international law; bourgeois democracy giving space to fascist governance, resources are plundered by multinationals leaving populations in death and hunger, while millions of workers -creators of the social wealth- struggle to survive on wages that barely cover food, rent, and healthcare.

Are owners of the means of production lucky “hardworkers”, are some countries poor or underdeveloped or is the accumulation of wealth into the hands of few a long bloody history of theft? Do wars happen due to psychotic leaders or are the underlying laws of capitalist economy the ones that lead to imperialist aggression? Are unions meant to manage or smoothen out workplace misery or are they schools of workers power and struggle for an international cause? Is a war of one country against another the highest form of war or is the war between the basic social classes the most ruthless of all wars? Is the world doomed to self-destruction or is there a realistic way that people can live in relations of mutual benefit and prosperity with respect to the environment?

In a world flooded with information and polemic misinformation, of bourgeois analysis and AI-driven fake news, it is easy to be distracted, misled, or divided. Despite that, the global working class is questioning the status quo every day, looking for answers and solutions. The Marxist perspective grounded in historical materialism and class analysis cuts through the confusion, exposing the structures of exploitation, revealing the mechanisms of imperialism, and connecting the global accumulation of capital to local and international struggles. In this age of alienation, working class theoretical work is not an academic luxury it is a weapon for survival and emancipation.

The IWI was founded in May 2022 as a child of mature conditions by seasoned trade unionists, scholars, and activists from thirteen countries across five continents. It is not a neutral think tank, but a living school for militants, a hub for young workers, and a crucible for class struggle in the contemporary world. Its mission is clear: to arm trade unionists with the tools of theoretical analysis, to unite theory in praxis, to strengthen class-conscious organizing, and to help new generations in their fight for a world free of exploitation.

Over its first three years, the IWI has demonstrated its indispensable role in spite of its limited resources. Through international virtual seminars, symposia, and workshops, it has reached over 800 trade unionists from more than 90 countries, connecting them with living Marxist theory and providing practical strategies for confronting modern capitalism. From the corrosive influence of NGOs as instruments of imperialism to the geopolitical roots of tariffs, wars and genocide, the IWI has created the space for incisive analysis and concrete guidance for action.

Its seminars tackle the urgent issues of our era: the betrayal of social democracy against revolutionary movements, the corruption of yellow unions, and the catastrophic role of international institutions in protecting capitalist interests. The IWI examines historical lessons from the USSR for contemporary militant unions, the pivotal role of women in the global labor movement, and the ideological and practical challenges posed by artificial intelligence as a tool of control and intensified exploitation. Each seminar is a battlefield of ideas, sharpening the consciousness of activists and linking them with comrades across continents.

Beyond digital spaces, the IWI organizes international delegations, participates in global conferences, and establishes committees in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. Its publishing initiatives, including the history of the WFTU, ensure that the heroic struggles of labor are remembered, studied, and applied to contemporary battles.

The upcoming Three-Year Assembly of the IWI is more than a meeting. It is a call for collective formation of our future priorities. In an era where history is rewritten to erase workers struggles and imperialist powers seek to divide and block the empowerment of the working class movement, this assembly is an opportunity to connect, strategize, and organize. The suggested plan of actions includes crucial themes that shape our day to day life: the jungle of international law and imperialist ambitions, multipolar and unipolar global conflicts, economic blockades, capitalism versus socialism, history and political economy. As trade unionists we aim to learn from historical victories and defeats, learn from unions’ material experience worldwide, and prepare to defend historical truth against the distortions of the ruling class.

This assembly is for trade unionists, scholars, activists, and young workers who want to take Marxist theory off the page and into the workplaces, offices, and schools where the class struggle is lived every day. Knowledge is power for change and a united working class is unstoppable. The fight is global, the responsibility is collective, and the time to act is now.
