“Workers have the obligation to be the first to fight against the aggressiveness of foreign interventions.”

We asked the Honorary President of the World Federation of Trade Unions, comrade George Mavrikos, for a brief statement on the military conflict between Iran and Israel.

What will happen with Iran’s nuclear weapons?

We, as the International Workers’ Institute (IWI), are against nuclear weapons, just like the entire class-oriented trade union movement. This is a firm and non-negotiable position. However, the theories of the imperialists from NATO, the USA, the EU, and Israel about nuclear issues are lies. They are excuses and hypocrisy. Just like the lies about Saddam Hussein’s “chemical weapons.” What they say about democracy and dictatorship and all the rest is reheated nonsense. It is madness that the instruments of capitalist dictatorship pretend to be democrats; that the salaried personnel of monopoly dictatorship speak to us about democracy.

Therefore, all of that has nothing to do with the truth. Imperialism and imperialists have nothing to do with truth, democracy, or religion. They all worship only one god: profit.

So, what’s the big picture?

The main cause lies in the rivalries for global hegemony and power. A new repartition of the world is underway, and each imperialist is fighting to secure the best possible starting position in this competition.

The USA has already dealt a very strong blow to Germany, which had based its economic power for 40 years on cheap Russian gas. That is over now. The first major “victory” of the USA and the military-industrial complex has come at the expense of German monopolies.

The second is the overthrow of Al Assad in Syria. That change in Syria is very critical — a turning point. Today, Syria is divided into three parts: one under Turkey’s control, another under the USA’s, and another under Israel’s. Israel’s occupation of the Golan is part of the Zionist strategic plans for what they call “Greater Israel.”

The verbal confrontations between Erdogan and Netanyahu are nothing but smoke and mirrors to confuse. The shift in Syria, combined with the blow to Hezbollah and Hamas, has cut off Iran and China’s access route to Europe. This is the second major “victory” of the USA.

Now it is Iran’s turn. A large country, larger than many European nations, with a much richer history and culture than that of Europeans. With friendly relations with Russia and China. With a theocratic regime. And most importantly: a recent member of BRICS, supporting de-dollarization and the construction of a multipolar world; in other words, to both push back against the uncontrolled printing of dollars in the USA and to secure a safe route from China to the West.

If the USA achieves its goals in Iran, the road to Korea and Taiwan will open wide. New alliances are forming there, others are falling apart. India is a highly coveted bride. The same goes for Pakistan.

What is your assessment of some Iranian declarations supporting Israel’s attack?

We read statements from trade union forces and other “progressive” groups in the region who, in essence, support Israel’s unprovoked attack against Iran. Forces that hope the USA and Israel will solve the real problems of their countries…

They propose that Iran surrender to the USA and hand over power to others, as happened in Syria, and earlier in Iraq, Libya, etc. Something similar to the exiled Cuban counterrevolutionaries in Miami who call on the US government to “democratize” Cuba.

Such forces — sooner or later — will be cast aside by life itself. That’s fine. Everyone has the right to express their views. And we have the right to make our own observations.

Workers, however, who are the victims of imperialist rivalries, have the obligation to see the bigger picture. To understand what is the priority, what dominates the moment. What is the main task that the circumstances demand.

And to define their position, above all, as a class for itself. To fight against imperialist intervention. To be the first to stand up to the aggressiveness of foreign interventions, to the genocide Israel is committing, against the War Party.

To demand the elimination of nuclear weapons everywhere. And at the same time, to build the front that will allow them to continue and complete the class struggle in order to achieve social change in favor of the popular masses.

So they can build, themselves, as they wish and as they dream, their own country. Without exploitation or capitalist barbarism.
